Resume

Resume does not infect the global template or any Word documents on the local machine. It spreads by sending itself in an Outlook message like this:

Subject: Resume - Janet Simons Body: To: Director of Sales/MarketingAttached is my resume with a list of references contained within.Please feel free to call or email me if you have any further questions regarding my experience. I am looking forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Janet Simons. Attachment: [active infected document]

Where the "active infected document" usually is "Explorer.doc", but it might be different, for example, when the file has been saved with a different name.

When the attached Word document is opened, the worm takes control and sends itself to all recipients in all Outlook address books.

When the above mentioned document is closed, the worm saves its code in

C:\Data\Normal.dot

Where C:\Data is a directory that the worm creates. In addition, the worm saves its code to:

C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\Explorer.doc

Which makes it active when the Word is run again.

Immediately after that has been done, Resume executes its destructive payload trying to make the machine unbootable. It will try to delete all files from the following directories:

C:\*.*C:\My Documents\*.*C:\WINDOWS\*.*C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\*.*C:\WINNT\*.*C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\*.*

and from all drives from "A:\" to "Z:\*.* "

The attempt to delete all files from floppy drives can cause an error.

The payload will work if the Windows instalation uses the above mentioned paths.

The virus contains the following commented text which it never shows:
