Summary
Email.0Day.Malware is a generic detection name for new, undefined malware. email worms at the beginning of their spam run are an example of malware that could be detected as such.
The detection is made by the Zero-Hour Protection implemented in some of F-Secure's Anti-Virus products.
Removal
Based on the settings of your F-Secure security product, it will either move the file to the quarantine where it cannot spread or cause harm, or remove it.
A False Positive is when a file is incorrectly detected as harmful, usually because its code or behavior resembles known harmful programs. A False Positive will usually be fixed in a subsequent database update without any action needed on your part. If you wish, you may also:
Check for the latest database updates
First, check if your F-Secure security program is using the latest updates, then try scanning the file again.
Submit a sample
After checking, if you still believe the file is incorrectly detected, you can submit a sample of it for re-analysis.
Note: If the file was moved to quarantine, you need to collect the file from quarantine before you can submit it.
Exclude a file from further scanning
If you are certain that the file is safe and want to continue using it, you can exclude it from further scanning by the F-Secure security product.
Note: You need administrative rights to change the settings.
Technical Details
Various F-Secure Anti-Virus products detect newly created email-based malware usingZero Hour Protection only moments after they begin spreading. Typically these viruses and worms have not yet been analyzed; it is the Zero Hour Protection techniques that confirm the inspected email contains new malware.
At this stage of detection, the malware has not yet been included to the more traditional virus definition databases. It does not yet have a signature. As soon as the detection has been added to the definition updates, the name will be changed from the generic Email.0Day.Malware to the actual name of the malware. If the email messages infected with Email.0Day.Malware are rescanned at a later date the infection will likely have a different name.
Every new malware detected by F-Secure Anti-Virus products utilizing Zero Hour Protection use the generic name of Email.0Day.Malware. Multiple viruses or worms are detected under this name.
If at all possible, please provide a sample of the malware detected for analysis by our Security Labs. This will assist us in creating signature definitions to include in our detection databases.
