Type:  PUA

Platform:  W32

Aliases:  PotentiallyUnwanted:W32/App.[variant]!Online

This detection from the F-Secure Security Cloud identifies a program that has behaviors or aspects which are considered undesirable, unwanted or risky, but do not meet the stricter definition of malware.

As you are the best judge of whether you want to trust and use a 'potentially unwanted' or 'unwanted' application, you may change the settings of your F-Secure security product to remove, block, quarantine or allow it to run.

Automatic action

Based on the settings of your F-Secure security product, it will either prompt you for a desired action, allow the program to run, block access to the program but leave it in place, or move it to the quarantine where it cannot harm your device.

Change the product action

If you want to change the action the product takes, you can change the settings to ask you what you want to do with each detected program or file. Note: you need administrative rights to change the settings.

Technical Details

F-Secure Security Cloud is an online reputation service that provides the latest analysis and reputation rating for programs, files and websites. If a questionable program or file is found during a scan, a query is sent to the Security Cloud to get the most recent reputation rating for it.

Based on the settings of your F-Secure security product, it will then use the information from Security Cloud (and if needed, further analysis) to determine whether to delete, quarantine or block the program or file.

The Security Cloud rating for the identified program or file indicates that it is a potentially unwanted application (PUA) as it has behaviors or aspects that can have an undesirable or unwanted impact on your privacy, security or productivity.

An application is detected as a PUA if it exhibits any of the following:

Unwanted impact on productivity:
  • Disrupting the desired user experience
  • Waste of time
  • Program performs unexpected, unwelcome and unauthorized actions, which lead to unwanted distractions, lost opportunities or lowered productivity
  • Time or monetary cost of cleaning, maintaining or reformatting the affected device
Unwanted stress on the device's resources:
  • Excessive use of computing resources - disk space, SSD writes, Memory, CPU time, etc
  • Excessive bandwidth or data plan consumption
Compromises security:
  • Exposure to unexpected, questionable or unverified content, location or applications
Compromises privacy:
  • Personal information is unnecessarily exposed to unknown or unauthorized parties
