Overview

The scammer approaches the individual victim through online conversation or other targeted method. Sometimes called "spear phishing" when used in an email phishing attempt.

The targeted individual may have some characteristic that is interesting to the scammer, for example interest in investing or having been involved in a prior scam. Individuals also may be targeted based on their social media activity.
