The scammer impersonates a friend or family member of the victim. These scams are high risk, since the close relationship between the victim and the person being impersonated means there is greater likelihood that the impersonation attempt will not feel authentic to the victim. However, scammers might take the chance, in order to try to turn the high level of trust between friends or family members into a higher payout.
