Overview
The scammer impersonates a banking or financial institution or official.
This impersonation technique is commonly used in scams which ask the victim to move money directly from their bank account, such as the 6.3 Fake Fraud/'Protect Your Money'/Phantom Hacker Scam, 2.2.3 Spoofed Or Phishing Interaction Scams which present the victim with a fake login page. It is also used in various Investment Scams where the scammer is trying to convince the victim that they are working with a legitimate financial institution.
To convince the victim they are actually talking to a bank, often the scammers will employ tactics such as spoofing the bank on caller ID, duplicating the legitimate bank's web or app appearance, or sprinkling a conversation with facts about a person such as their address, birthdate, credit card number, or other information gleaned from online sources.
