Generate a strong password

Use F‑Secure’s easy Password Generator to generate strong passwords for free. Here’s how to use the tool:

  1. Choose character types: Include or exclude upper-and-lowercase letters, numbers and special symbols. To generate the strongest password, keep all four selected.

  2. Set the password length: Drag the slider to change the number of characters. The default is 32 characters, but you can also set the password length to, for example, 12, 16 or 20 characters.

  3. Generate a secure password: If you don’t like the current characters, click the Generate new button. This will instantly refresh the box with a new random password based on your settings.

  4. Copy the password: Click on the Copy button to save the password to your clipboard.

How to create a strong password?

Strong passwords are long, random and unique. The harder it is for a hacker or computer to guess through trying every combination, the safer you are. Key principles for creating strong passwords are:

  • Length: Aim for 16–32-character passwords. Each extra character increases security exponentially, making it much harder for computers to brute-force.

  • Mix character types: A strong password should be a mix of uppercase letters (A–Z), lowercase letters (a–z), numbers (0–9), and special symbols (!, @, #, $, %)

  • No personal information: Avoid names, birthdays, or hobbies as hackers use social engineering to guess passwords based on your public info.

  • Don’t reuse: Use a unique password for every account. If you need a strong password for a different site, click Generate new again to get a unique one.

Because strong, random passwords are impossible to memorize, F‑Secure recommends using a password manager to store them in a digital vault so you don’t have to remember them.

According to America’s Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), the best way to protect against account takeover is to store strong passwords in a password manager.
