Summary

Storielle is a mass-mailer worm. Most likely it originates from Italy. The worm uses it's own SMTP engine so it does not depend on any specific email client. It collects email addresses from the Windows Adress Book.

Removal

Based on the settings of your F-Secure security product, it will either move the file to the quarantine where it cannot spread or cause harm, or remove it.

A False Positive is when a file is incorrectly detected as harmful, usually because its code or behavior resembles known harmful programs. A False Positive will usually be fixed in a subsequent database update without any action needed on your part. If you wish, you may also:

  • Check for the latest database updates

First check if your F-Secure security program is using the latest updates, then try scanning the file again.

  • Submit a sample

After checking, if you still believe the file is incorrectly detected, you can submit a sample of it for re-analysis.

Note: If the file was moved to quarantine, you need to collect the file from quarantine before you can submit it.

  • Exclude a file from further scanning

If you are certain that the file is safe and want to continue using it, you can exclude it from further scanning by the F-Secure security product.

Note: You need administrative rights to change the settings.

Technical Details

The email composed from the following parts: Subjects:

"Storielle.."
"Divertimento assicurato.."
"Leggete urgentemente questa email!! (se avete tempo da perdere)"

Message body:

"dai un' occhiata all' allegato e ti farai due risate ;-)"
"devi assolutamente vedere il file che ti ho allegato."
"guarda l' allegato... ti potrebbe interessare."

Attachment:

"bar.exe"
"pippo.exe"
"porkis.exe"

When the attachment is open first it installs itself to the Windows directory as "dllmgr.exe". This exe file is added to the registry so Windows will start the worm when the computer starts. The registry value is:

  • 'HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Dll manager'

After this it displays seven message boxes with Italian messages and exits. The installed copy at next startup opens the Windows Address Book and mails itself to all the addresses it can find there. Due to a bug in the code the worm can't find the correct addresses in the WAB file so it is unable to spread. On the September 6th it displays the following message:

F-Secure Anti-Virus with the latest updates detects this worm.
