Summary

VBS/Jer is a VBScript worm.

Removal

Based on the settings of your F-Secure security product, it will either move the file to the quarantine where it cannot spread or cause harm, or remove it.

A False Positive is when a file is incorrectly detected as harmful, usually because its code or behavior resembles known harmful programs. A False Positive will usually be fixed in a subsequent database update without any action needed on your part. If you wish, you may also:

  • Check for the latest database updates

First check if your F-Secure security program is using the latest updates, then try scanning the file again.

  • Submit a sample

After checking, if you still believe the file is incorrectly detected, you can submit a sample of it for re-analysis.

Note: If the file was moved to quarantine, you need to collect the file from quarantine before you can submit it.

  • Exclude a file from further scanning

If you are certain that the file is safe and want to continue using it, you can exclude it from further scanning by the F-Secure security product.

Note: You need administrative rights to change the settings.

Technical Details

Variant:Jer.A

Once excuted, the worm copies itself to the Windows System directory as "jer.htm". It modifies the registry so that the worm will be executed each time the system is restarted.

Then it disables several components from the Windows desktop, such as find, shutdown and network properties. It tries to change the Windows version to "VBS.GinSenG", the registered owner to "I Lovel You, Min" and the registered organizition to "GinsengBoy 2000".

In addition, it replaces the "script.ini" file from the mIRC directory to spread itself when an user joins the same channel where the infected user is. Furthermore, when the infected user is connecting to the IRC server, the worm joins to channel "#pioneer" and sends a message to that channel: "Another user infected by GinsengBoy -- haha".

Finally, it attempts to send itself using Outlook with the following message header:

Subject:

Jer Resume

Body: I would really like to get a new job.
Please check out my resume.

 Enjoy :-)

 GinsengBoy

 Attachment: Jer.htm

However, this fails due to a bug.

The worm contains following commented lines on the top of its code:

' VBS.GinSenG - by OnG

' Thanks for the help on this one ;-P
