Summary

Antiman is an email worm written in Delphi. The most probably origin of this worm is România. The worm has its own SMTP engine to send emails. The worm harvests victims' email addresses from different files on a local hard drive.

Removal

Based on the settings of your F-Secure security product, it will either move the file to the quarantine where it cannot spread or cause harm, or remove it.

A False Positive is when a file is incorrectly detected as harmful, usually because its code or behavior resembles known harmful programs. A False Positive will usually be fixed in a subsequent database update without any action needed on your part. If you wish, you may also:

  • Check for the latest database updates

First check if your F-Secure security program is using the latest updates, then try scanning the file again.

  • Submit a sample

After checking, if you still believe the file is incorrectly detected, you can submit a sample of it for re-analysis.

Note: If the file was moved to quarantine, you need to collect the file from quarantine before you can submit it.

  • Exclude a file from further scanning

If you are certain that the file is safe and want to continue using it, you can exclude it from further scanning by the F-Secure security product.

Note: You need administrative rights to change the settings.

Technical Details

The worm is a PE executable file 393 kilobytes long, written in Delphi. The worm's file is not packed.

Installation to system

When run, the worm copies itself as FUNNY.SCR file to Windows folder and also as STARTWIN.EXE file to the startup folder of a current user. Then the worm creates a startup key for its SCR file in the Registry:

[HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop]
"SCRNSAVE.EXE" = "%WinDir%\funny.scr"

The worm creates the M.TXT file in the root of C: drive to verify that it has suitable access rights.

Spreading in emails

Before spreading the worm scans certain files on a hard disk to harvest victims' email addresses. The following files are scanned:

Deleted Items.dbx
Inbox.dbx
Outbox.dbx
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\ypager.log
C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\ypager2.log

To send emails the worm uses either the default user's SMTP server or the hardcoded list of SMTP servers:

mail.iasi.rdsnet.ro
smtp.dnt.ro
scentra.dntcj.ro
relay-1.dntis.ro
mail.easynet.ro

The worm sends messages with different subjects, body texts and attachment names. Here's the list of possible email subjects:

Poza de la mare

Faza cu camila
De ce mor mai repede curiosii...
Antimanele

Here's the list of possible email body texts:

Va multumesc (din suflet).

Here's the list of possible worm's attachment names:

The worm fakes the sender's email address. It can be one of the following:

ionut@yahoo.com
mariana@yahoo.com
alice@yahoo.com
bia@yahoo.com
Ionut Popovici@xnet.ro
Georgiana@fantasy.ro
office@bitdefender.ro
antimanele@antimanele.go.ro

Payload

The worm has a nasty payload. When it scans files on a hard disk, it checks the files with the following extensions:

.mp3
.wma
.avi
.wav
.mid
.midi
.asf
.mpg
.mpeg
.jpeg
.jpg
.bmp
.rar
.zip
.ace

If these files contain any of the following strings in their names, they are deleted from a hard drive:

However this routine is quite buggy: files with .AVI and .WAV extensions are not deleted at all, some files with the above given names are not deleted either.
