Summary

Implant is a polymorphic multipartite virus. It infects COM, EXE and SYS files as well as floppy boot sectors and the hard disk MBR.

Removal

Based on the settings of your F-Secure security product, it will either move the file to the quarantine where it cannot spread or cause harm, or remove it.

A False Positive is when a file is incorrectly detected as harmful, usually because its code or behavior resembles known harmful programs. A False Positive will usually be fixed in a subsequent database update without any action needed on your part. If you wish, you may also:

  • Check for the latest database updates

First check if your F-Secure security program is using the latest updates, then try scanning the file again.

  • Submit a sample

After checking, if you still believe the file is incorrectly detected, you can submit a sample of it for re-analysis.

Note: If the file was moved to quarantine, you need to collect the file from quarantine before you can submit it.

  • Exclude a file from further scanning

If you are certain that the file is safe and want to continue using it, you can exclude it from further scanning by the F-Secure security product.

Note: You need administrative rights to change the settings.

Technical Details

In files the virus is polymorphic. It has a double layer encryption which makes the detection and the disinfection more difficult. The virus is not polymorphic in boot sectors.

Implant makes it impossible to boot from a typical boot diskette: it uses the circular extended partion technique. It is possible to boot the infected PC only from a clean MS-DOS 3.x, 4.x or PC DOS 7.x system diskette. Most common boot floppies with MS-DOS 5.x, 6.x or 7.x (Win95) will simply crash during the boot-up.

Since the virus is full stealth everything looks clean when the virus is resident. It will not infect many files, based on their names. Also, the virus will not start spreading immediatly after it has been run, it waits up to an hour - apparently to fool antivirus researchers who are trying to replicate it.

Implant activates on the 4th of June. At this date it attempts to overwrite the boot sector of the hard drive and shows this message on screen:
