MWR was acquired by F-Secure corp in June 2018. This article was published before MWR became part of F-Secure Consulting in September 2019.

- Ian, one piece of criteria for being listed in the 1000 Companies to Inspire Britain is to grow “at exceptional rates – 70 per cent on average.” What can you attribute to MWR’s “exceptional” growth? Or, put differently, what are we doing right?

While we are operating in a fast-growing sector, the increase in both frequency and sophistication of cyber attacks – and our ability to assist our clients with countering them – drives demand for our services. We also work to understand our clients’ challenges, which means we are now fortunate enough to have over 300 great people working to solve those problems on a daily basis. This allows us to respond quickly to our clients’ needs with technical insights that can help keep their business secure.

- Our mission is to “do awesome security”. In an industry that moves at a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it pace, how do we keep on top of the latest security technology and techniques?

We have always been a business that has put a huge amount of emphasis on research. With the pace of technology adoption ever increasing, continuous research is necessary to understand how businesses may be targeted. The team has a great track record of this – from our early mobile research almost ten years ago to the work we published on Amazon Alexa late last year. We have seen the challenges our clients are facing and investigated which security aspects best meet those challenges. We strongly believe that addressing security early can be very cost effective and will often add value to a business in the long term.

- The report remarks that “in these times of global macro-economic and geo-political uncertainty, [these 1000 companies] are our greatest prospect for building a resilient and productive economy.” How do companies like MWR fit into this idea?

As the report mentions, the geopolitical uncertainty is something that we are all facing today. This is happening alongside many technologies – some of which may have been around for some time now –only just being adopted into critical functions, which increases the security implications for their use.  Through skills development, research, and information sharing, we believe that we play a strong role in all the regions where we operate, supporting our clients and advancing cyber security as whole.

- If an individual used this report to field prospective employers, what would you say are the main reasons why someone should work at MWR?

MWR is a great place to work, not least because you’ll get to work with some of the best in the industry. The roles here are challenging, but we have a great and collaborative environment. For example, we’ve recently been running international hack nights, bringing teams from our Poland, US, UK, Singapore offices together to work on developing new attack simulation solutions over video conference. As an international company there is also the opportunity to travel, and even move between our offices.

1000 Companies to Inspire Britain 2018 is out now. Our latest vacancies can be found here.
