F-Secure Linux Security
Benefits of the solution:
Nihon Unisys provides cutting-edge IT services, and part of their approach to security involves using and testing the same security products that they sell to customers. They have been using F-Secure security products to protect their workstations and Linux servers for over 16 years. We recently had a chance to talk to Junichi Yamanashi, Head Manager of Group Operations, and Masaki Ashida, Head of Group Infrastructure in the System Technology Management Division.
What kind of company is Nihon Unisys?
We are a solution provider, established in 1958 when the computer industry was in its early days. We have supported the IT sector in Japan over the years by constantly providing IT services that respond to the needs of the current generation. With this in mind, we provide system development, system integration, and cloud computing services.
How does Nihon Unisys approach security?
We consider multi-layered protection to be the foundation of our security policy. We look at the protection of internal networks, e-mails, internet access points, and other strong points and security features provided by each antivirus vendor, and consider how it can be used and operated internally based on our experience. This allows us to provide a security solution to our customers. Not only do we take into consideration how to avoid security risks, but we also provide and support security policies to protect users from an IT perspective, which has allowed us to reduce our overall costs. Also, UNIADEX, one of our group companies, provides comprehensive ICT support services focusing on network and support businesses, including security. They are a partner of F-Secure.
Which F-Secure products do you use?
As of June 2012, Nihon Unisys Group has about 10,000 employees in total, and the number of client PCs in use is about 20,000. We use "F-Secure Anti-Virus for Workstations version 9.00/9.20" for our workstations and "F-Secure Linux Security version 9.11/9.13" for our Linux servers.
What made you decide to use F-Secure products?
We started using F-Secure products in 1996. Back then, there was not a lot of information on antivirus products, and we learned that F-Secure's virus scanning engine was highly acclaimed internationally. Our staff member who was in charge at the time went all the way to Finland to learn about F-Secure and its products. For the 16 years since then, we have continued using F-Secure's products.
Has F-Secure been effective?
In terms of end-point security, we have various PC environments in our internal LAN to handle different customers and projects. To cope with everything in our network, it is absolutely imperative that we can centrally manage virus definitions, the status of realtime scanning, virus detections, and how to process malware. At first we had a team of three dedicated specialists and 10 other security-related people, but when we deployed "F-Secure Policy Manager 7" in 2005, central management became possible. We were able to detect and respond to problems faster from a single location, and PCs with vulnerabilities were eliminated from our network as a result. As of now, we basically have one person managing security for 20,000 computers. The cost-effectiveness of our security management has increased dramatically thanks to F-Secure.
Do you have any requests for F-Secure?
It would be great if F-Secure can continue strengthening their security products and services, especially in virtualization software and Linux. The advantage of being able to centrally manage virus detections and administer security operations with few people is tremendous. I look forward to seeing F-Secure provide even better security features and enhancements in the future.
