What is incident response?

Incident response (IR) is the methodology used to counter an attacker present on the network, before damage is done. Rather than a pure reactionary exercise, it is the preparation in advance of an incident, the period used to understand the nature of a threat and how close attackers are to their objective, and the ability to conduct a post-mortem. Incident response can be broken down into activities that pre-empt and prepare for an incident (readiness) and those that counteract and remediate (response). A mix of both helps organizations face complex and persistent threats.
