Product lifecycle policies

Overview

Products reach their end of life for various reasons. These reasons may be due to changes in demand, technology innovation and changes in competitive landscape, or the products simply mature over time and are replaced by new ones. While this is an established part of the overall product life cycle, F-Secure recognizes that end-of-life milestones often prompt customers to review the way in which such milestones impact the F-Secure products in their environments.

With this in mind, we have set out F- Secure's End of Life Policy to help customers better manage product end-of-life transition and to understand the role that F-Secure can play in helping them to migrate to alternative F-Secure products and solutions.

Risks of using products after their End-of-Life date

The threat landscape is constantly evolving, which also means changes in the protection offered by F-Secure. Old products cannot respond to all the current threats.

Security fixes and non-security fixes are not provided for unsupported product versions. Virus definition updates are not tested with End-of-Lifed products. This may decrease the protection capability and reliability of old products, causing, for example, the malfunctioning of the product, conflicts with third party software, false positives and negatives.

Lifecycle Policy: Business Suite

Product versioning

The F-Secure Business Suite solution consists of various products, such as Policy Manager or Client Security. These products have major, minor, and maintenance versions. The major version can also be referred to as the series, defined by the major version number (e.g. 14-series). Each series has its own lifecycle, and multiple product series can be supported at the same time. Typical changes in the product per version type include:

  • Major (M.0)
    • Distinctively new product generation or significant changes in the product functionality, performance, or security
  • Minor (x.N)
    • New features and improvements
    • Compatibility with changes in other F-Secure products
  • Maintenance (x.xc)
    • Address critical defects or vulnerabilities
    • Support for 3rd party platform updates
    • In principle, maintenance releases do not introduce changes to the existing functionality
  • Hotfixes
    • Also known as patches, they address individual or urgent fixes that do not require a full product release
    • Come in two categories: security and non-security hotfixes

F-Secure reserves the right to discontinue or deprecate existing functionality upon releasing a new (major or minor) product version based on changes in the threat landscape, market situation, or any other business reason. All such changes are listed in the product release notes.

Product version support

The product versioning and lifecycle policy described here is applicable only to F-Secure Business Suite. F-Secure's Security Cloud and other backend systems that are used by the product follow an internal lifecycle policy and do not require any actions from customers. F-Secure updates Security Cloud and other services without impact to the application functionality and performance.

The lifecycle of a product series is a minimum of three (3) years from General Availability of the major version or until one (1) year after the release of the next major version, whichever is longer. Inside a product series, minor or maintenance releases do not extend the lifecycle.

A new maintenance release automatically deprecates any previous release within the same minor version. Security hotfixes are provided for every supported version, except in the case of Policy Manager where it is only applicable to the latest version within a series. Non-security hotfixes are provided only for the latest release within a series.

Product updates

F-Secure Business Suite products can be updated by installing the new version from our download pages. Users are responsible for updating F-Secure products in their production and ensuring that they are using an officially supported version.

End-of-life communication

F-Secure makes end-of-life product announcements on the End-of-Life Announcements page. We encourage users to visit this site regularly as it contains useful information regarding F-Secure's end-of-life program.

To inform partners and customers well in advance of an approaching end-of-life milestone, F-Secure sends an electronic notification respectively 180 days and 90 days prior to a product end of life.

Change policy

F-Secure reserves the right to change this policy without prior notice, in which case the new policy will be made available to partners and customers on the supported products page.

Lifecycle Policy: Protection Service for Business

The Product Life Cycle is set for the Product Series. Multiple product series can be active at the same time. Product Series is defined with product Major Version number, i.e. 9-series and 10-series of F-Secure Client Security.

Product Life Cycle length is three years from General Availability of a Major Version in each Product Series, or until one year after release of a successor major version, whichever is shorter.

Inside a Product Series individual product releases do not extend the length of the life span. A product release can be a minor product release or security/non-security hotfix release.

Security Hotfixes are made on the Current version and one version prior to that in each supported product series.

Non-security hotfixes are made on Current version of each supported product series.

Service Pack releases are made on Current version of each supported product series.

F-Secure makes product end of life announcements at the End-of-Life Announcements page. We encourage you to visit this site regularly as it contains useful information regarding F-Secure's end-of-life program.

To inform our customers well in advance of an approaching product End-of-Life milestone, customers will be sent an electronic notification first in 180 days and finally 90 days prior to a product End-of-Life.

F-Secure can use judgment in changing the product life cycle or time different to what is defined in this policy due to reasons like an operating system vendor changing their product support life span, or due to F-Secure's decision to stop selling, manufacturing and supporting a product due to business reasons.

F-Secure reserves rights to change this policy without a prior note in which case new policy is available at Supported products page.

Lifecycle Policy: Cloud Protection for Salesforce

Salesforce platform support policy

Salesforce makes major updates to their platform three times per year, usually in Spring, Summer, and Winter. Salesforce plans their platform updates months in advance and communicates the schedule to partners and customers through Salesforce roadmap update sessions. Salesforce first validates prerelease updates in sandboxes and then automatically rolls out new platform releases to production environments globally.

F-Secure is committed to supporting the latest Salesforce platform updates and providing full product compatibility with new releases before they are deployed to production environments. When changes introduced in a Salesforce platform release break compatibility, F-Secure may release new versions of the Cloud Protection application to address and fix compatibility issues.

Version change policy

The product lifecycle consists of major, minor, and maintenance versions of the product. Typical changes in the product per version type include:

  • Major (M.0)

F-Secure may release a new major or minor release of the application to support new Salesforce platform updates. In such cases, the previous version of the application is announced as reaching end of life when the new version becomes generally available.

Maintenance releases do not extend the lifespan. A new maintenance release automatically deprecates any previous maintenance release within the same major/minor version.

Product update policy

F-Secure Cloud Protection application can be updated by installing a new version from Salesforce AppExchange. F-Secure can also update the application remotely.

F-Secure highly recommends that you validate a new version of the application in sandbox environments before deploying it to production.

F-Secure provides "upgrade-as-a-service" free of charge and customers can contact F-Secure technical support to schedule automatic updates in a production or sandbox environment at the most convenient time.

F-Secure may update the application remotely without notice if there is a critical defect or vulnerability that can impact performance or compromise the security of the customer's Salesforce organization.
