Source: Secunia
Date of Discovery: 21.08.2008
Criticality: Negligible
Affects:
Folder Lock 5.x

Compromise From: Local system
Compromise Type: Exposure of sensitive information

Summary

A security issue in Folder Lock, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to disclose sensitive information.

Detailed Description

A security issue in Folder Lock, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to disclose sensitive information.

The security issue is caused due to the application storing the application's password using a weak encryption algorithm within the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\QualityControl" registry key. This can be exploited to extract the original password and gain access to locked files by decrypting the "_pack" registry value.

Successful exploitation allows access to Folder Lock protected files, but requires administrative privileges.

The security issue is confirmed in version 5.9.5. Other versions may also be affected.

Solution

Do not rely on the security provided by Folder Lock if Administrator privileges are granted to untrusted users.
