Hello,

I run the company (small) network, and I've been using your hoax and virus
description database for a long time.

We've never used antiviral software on the company; for 3 years I've managed
(really) to keep the network "immune" by education alone ("Whoso pulleth out
unexpected attachments from emails, or bring/download suspicious files to
the company shall be hung by the neck and cut into little pieces").

But then the company OWNER got Happy99 (I've used your database information
to clean his computer by hand, and also told the virus sender - the director
of a well-known American company - how to do it). Then he got MTX. Of all
employees, I could not cut HIM into pieces, so when we got our own email
server I decided to filter emails for viruses.

Downloaded amavis, and linux demo versions of two of your competitors
(unfortunately you don't offer a downloadable linux demo). Amavis is a free
utility which can use various antivirus programs as plugins to scan email
attachments before they reach the end user.

It worked Ok. When the Navidad wave hit, amavis and its plugins got 60+
emails for one guy alone.

Although I hadn't tried your product, when we decided to buy the antivirus
license, I chose F-Secure, just because I know your database is really
complete, well-maintained, and up-to-date (I really pays to have such a nice
web site).

I've purchased/downloaded F-secure for linux, installed it in minutes, and
it's up and running. Installation was a breeze. If I knew how easy, well
integrated, auto-updateable, functional it was, I would have skipped the
demos altogether.

Of course I'm not using it only to scan emails; It autoscans the shared file
server directories and the networked windows PCs (smbmount them on the
server and fsav them), and I've set up a shared directory where Windows
users can throw suspicious files and have them automatically scanned by the
server.

only information I received was the subject line of the affected 
email.  Your virus database is the only one that allowed me to 
search by the virus symptom, in this case the subject line "FBI 
Secrets", instead of requiring me to know the virus's proper 
name before I could look up its identity and effects.  My praise to 
your team for such a common-sense utility.

I really should've been patting you on the back 3 years ago.
  
I am a computer tech/NetAdmin for a large company.  Three years ago
a laptop was having problems with the hard drive, upon inspection,
the hard drive contained the monkey.b virus.(Stoned.Angilene I think).
Anyhow, I was a Mcafee worshipper at the time.  Mcafee could detect
the virus, but the removal process involved destroying the data with
fdisk and then format.  I found a product on the web known as f-prot.
It successfully removed the virus and left the data intact!!
Have never looked back.  Full F-Secure user since, and will be
"to infinity and beyond!!"

To date, every supposed virus was a hoax.

them to verify supposed virus information before forwarding.   In time, 
perhaps all will do this, thereby eliminating unnecessary notifications.

There are a lot of sites out there that pretend to help people by giving
them step-by-step directions to do a myriad of things on their PC.  Yours is
the first site that gave clear, concise instructions with illustrations that
anyone could follow.  Too often folks assume that users know something that
they don't and the users end up getting lost in the instructions.  No way
could that happen with your easy to follow instructions.  You truly are to
be commended.  It seems like such a no-brainer, but your site is the first
one I've come across that I could give a 10 to on their instructions to
users.  Well done!

research these things.

Just today, one of these friends finally took me up on my offer and asked me
to validate a potential hoax before he sent it on to countless others.
Thanks to your awesome website, I was able to quickly respond to his request
for help and we were able to stop needless Internet Hoax E-mail Traffic.

Naturally, I gave him the URL to the page about the specific hoax in

That is when I found your site.  The layout of your site makes it very easy to

I wasn't sure where to send this to after reading the descriptions of 
addresses, but thought someone should know this. I'm happy with your website, 
someone sent me the link as a way to check all the warnings I recieve, if I'm 
gonna waste my time I'd rather do it wisely! I was looking in the "m" section 
and saw MIME FORMAT HOAX. I clicked and read it and was amazed. i never saw 
this type of warning before, but i constantly, using AOL, recieve mailings 
with MIME format attachments. It's because an internet mail user emails me 
with attachments that have more than one file. It's a default format AOL 
uses, which of course I'm unable to support and makes me mad, but I've never 
suffered a virus from it, either deleting the message, nor trying to open the 
attachment. I just wanted to confirm with you that you do have the correct 
info up there. And thank you for doing so. It helps us ppl out a great deal!!

your website and it is astonishing just how many of the hoaxes you have
listed I have received before knowing that they were just that...hoaxes.  I

Now, whenever I get an email that has "WARNING!" on it, the first place I
go is to your website, and so far, all of those emails are listed on there
in one form or another.

Now days, so many people are quick to tell you when something is wrong-  I 
just want to take a minute to THANK YOU!   I am just a simple, home computer 
user (with only a year's experience, mind you)  and your website has been 
INVALUABLE to me.  I am constantly barraged by well meaning people who send 
me virus warnings, alerting me of the "latest and greatest" virus that could 
"wipe out my hard drive".  It continues on with how "insidious"  it is- and 
if I didn't have access to your site- I would be scared to open anything on 
my computer!!  

Your search engine is so easy to use, and your data base is so extensive, 
that I HAVE ALWAYS FOUND WHAT I WAS SEARCHING FOR!!!    On each occasion, I 
attach the web page from your site, and send it back to all of the people who 
"warned me" of the newest virus.  Hopefully, it will alleviate their concern, 
and prevent them from spamming everyone else in their address book :-)  
Maybe.....  they will even look it up themselves next time, before sending it 
on to others!  (One can only hope!)

Anyway~  Many many thanks-  you provide an invaluable service to me, and many 
others.  I will try to "pass the word" as much as I can!

I just wanted to send a big THANK YOU for your information about the Trojan 
Virus in AOL.  I had so many problems with the virus, I really thought about 
throwing my computer out in the street!!  I called AOL so many times and the 
people there tell you to download Dr. Solomon's software that AOL has for 
free and it will take care of it.  Well, to say the least, they do not know 
what they are talking about.  Since the software program didn't find the 
virus I was told to call Dr. Solomon's to get help which is a $35 minimum 
just for talking to the support people there!!!  Finally I went searching 
myself and found your website....thanks to you I want to keep my computer in 
the house once again!!!

Just thought I'd tell you that you have an excellent site.  I have used
it many times before to check hoax warnings (and then directed the
sender to the appropraite hoax info page).  We used it today in fact to
deactivate two viruses we got on our computers at uni.  We had the Happy
99 worm on one and a trojan program on the other (ICP - internet chat
program I think).  Keep up the good work.

I just wanted to say thanks!!!!
I brought a graphic file to a sign company in Patchogue, New York to 
have a sign made and discovered that his machine had a virus. 
Actually he had two viruses. My IBM antivirus removed them from my 
own floppies  and his, but when I loaded it onto his machine, it 
would not remove them from his hard drive. Thanks to your extensive 
library on virus removal and your free download, I was able to clear 
the B1 and Monkey viruses from his machine and I was able to restore 
his data. I work as a computer technician for Bell Atlantic and they 
use IBM Antivus on their networks. However, trying to get information 
from IBM on this virus removal was a lost cause.
You have a great product and a very informative web site.

I wanted to thank you for your wonderful page.  I recently encountered 
my first in-home computer virus (I've helped others, but never
had one to call my own...).  I successfully cleaned it from my 
boot sector (STEALTH_C) but was unsure of possible side-effects 
or other signs to look for.  After looking up my virus, 
I found that STEALTH_C is farely benign, which put my mind at ease.

I enjoy F-PROT and wonder why I don't hear more about it from other pc users
in my community.
I tell them it is a very good program,{especially since it is free for
consumers on their personal computers}.
judging by the way the magaines write about F-PROT,I am

Previously I had to clean the infected files, copy all the hard drive 
files to a tape backup and reformat the drive to rid myself of the
boot portion of the virus.
