A type of browser plug-in, toolbars are applications which are 'added on' to web browser programs to provide additional functionality.  Toolbars can be very useful and improve a user's browsing experience; but because they use additional, potentially unverified, code that affects browser program, they may also introduce risks that were not present in the standalone browser.

Most toolbars are innocuous, but some toolbars are designed to secretly monitor a user's online browsing behavior.
