Application (Generic)

Detection Names : Application.generic.[variant]
Category:Riskware
Type:Application
Platform:W32

Summary

A Generic Detection of applications with suspect characteristics or potentially harmful behavior.

Additional Details

A program that is identified by a detection using the following format:

  • Application.Generic.[xxxxxx]

Where [xxxxxx] is a series of numbers, such as 123456

Indicates that the program was identified by a Generic Detection, which looks for applications with suspect characteristics or potentially harmful behavior.

About Applications

The Type designation 'Application' is used to categorize a legitimate program that may be a potential security risk if used by an unauthorized person or abused to perform actions beyond its intended use.

If misused, the program could allow an attacker to:

  • Gain unauthorized access to confidential information
  • Gain unauthorized user privileges
  • Direct the computer system to perform a harmful action

These programs may be considered a form of Riskware. For more information about Riskware, see the Riskware description.

Generic Detections

Unlike more traditional detections (also known as signatures or single-file detections) a Generic Detection does not identify a unique or individual malicious program. Instead, a Generic Detection looks for broadly applicable code or behavior characteristics that indicate a file as potentially malicious, so that a single Generic Detection can efficiently identify dozens, or even hundreds of malware.

For more information, see the Generic Detection description.

Exclusion Instructions

If you are certain that the file detected is a legitimate application file, you can exclude it from scanning:
