The proliferation of 2.6 billion virus-infected e-mails in August was stopped

In August, we saw the worst virus week in history with major virus outbreaks as well as some completely new techniques and motives behind viruses and their propagation. Hundreds of millions of computer users suffered from network problems, slow computers and overflowing spam e-mails. Some of the viruses, such as Sobig.F, were very advanced with special features making the work of virus hunters very challenging. We all experienced the vulnerability of our Internet-dependent society.

Today the Internet is used widely for e-mail newsletters, discussion lists and permission-based e-mail marketing campaigns. There may be tens of thousands of subscribers on one e-mail list. If a message infected by a virus is accidentally sent to an e-mail list, such as a customer newsletter, the effects can be widespread and potentially devastating. L-Soft and F-Secure have made it possible to protect millions of e-mail list subscribers from viruses.

L-Soft develops and sells software and outsourcing services for managing e-mail newsletters, discussion lists and e-mail marketing campaigns. F-Secure’s Antivirus technology was integrated into L-Soft’s LISTSERV® product line in 2001. After that, billions of LISTSERV® messages have been safely distributed virus-free.

In August, one of L-Soft’s servers that hosts discussion and announcement lists stopped 108,418 virus infected messages, thanks to the integration of F-Secure Anti-Virus with LISTSERV. As a result, viruses were stopped from spreading to as many as 2.6 billion e-mail list subscriptions, and the e-mail lists remained virus free.
