A virus threat - is it local or global?

A new virus is found in the wild. But is it a local phenomenon or is it the start of an infection world wide? For those who follow the virus industry, for example system administrators, home users and media, it is vital to quickly process the information produced every time a new virus is detected. This to be able to answer the question: Do I need to take action, now? F-Secure Sweden successfully launched an on-line statistics keeping track of the virus situation in Sweden in real time. With this service, open to the public through the Swedish website, F-Secure offers the best possible statistics on the virus situation in Sweden. This is something that has been highly appreciated by its users and also increases F-Secure’s position on the Swedish market.

Internet is global and so are most viruses but there are exceptions. This was obvious when the Ganda virus hit Sweden in March earlier this year. The virus was not even close to get into the 10 top lists of most spread viruses worldwide, even though it in a matter of hours became the most spread virus in Sweden. As it was not considered to be a major threat and therefore some of our largest competitors didn’t bother publishing detection until the week after. This because Ganda was not a problem – based on the statistics world wide.

To be able to provide a superior local virus statistics F-Secure started a cooperation with several local customers. The anti-virus software at the clients was configurated for the purpose of reporting all infections and all attempts directly to F-Secure via e-mail. Then a script processed the reports every thirty second and uploaded the information on the web site.

At the beginning there were only big organisations with a minimum of 3000 users that contributed to the statistics. Soon after the service went live the initiative has gained a huge support from administrators, media and home users. Many saw the possibility of always being able to follow the virus situation locally and in real time. Also being able to get data for the last 24 hours, week or months it is also possible to identify new trends.

The system is not dedicated to F-Secure software. Software from other antivirus companies could also be configurated and currently reports are being collected from 8 different antivirus engines. The system can process information from client software to software installed in servers and gateways, collecting the data other statistics misses.

Patrik Runald, Technical Manager at F-Secure Sweden and the founding father of this project, is very happy with the results. After the service was launched there has been an increasingly number of reporters hooked up to the system.

- The virus statistics has been very successful, explains Patrik Runald. Being able to present the best virus statistics in real time has also been a great tool for strengthen the profile of F-Secure as the local antivirus company. Knowing the local market conditions and then at the same time having all the benefits of a global company F-Secure has strengthen the position of being a spokesperson for the virus industry in Sweden.
