F-Secure to safeguard MacGREGOR's IT operations

The MacGREGOR Group is the global market leader in marine cargo flow solutions and services for ship-owners, ship operators, and shipyards. The products include hatch covers, cranes, RoRo equipment, shipboard elevators and escalators, galleys, cargo securing systems, and refrigeration systems. The Group operates in over 25 major shipping and shipbuilding countries and is constantly strengthening its local presence world-wide. The service network consists of more than 50 service stations offering 24-hour service around the globe to a fleet of 13,000 ships fitted with MacGREGOR products.

The Group has offices around the world, and, since 1995, has been centralizing functions and connecting offices to a network. There is still need for further standardization, anti-virus protection being part of that.

At MacGREGOR, everything vital is in electronic format, from e-mail to business process ERP (enterprise resource planning). Whole concepts for cranes and safety regulations are also designed electronically.

Why F-Secure?

To fully secure an entire corporate network against viruses, protection needs to be deployed at every point of the network. F-Secure Anti-Virus Total Suite includes anti-virus products to safeguard workstations, file servers, e-mail servers, and firewalls; all centrally manageable with one easy-to-use management solution - F-Secure Policy Manager.

“Initially we decided to go with another supplier, because of price and the global reach of the particular organization,” says Kimmo Lumme, Systems Expert. “A more extensive pilot phase, however, returned results that were not that impressive. In F-Secure, we found a solution offering solid quality at a good price.”

The e-mail scanning feature was very important for MacGREGOR, since most malware today spreads through e-mail. If a virus enters the corporate network, fighting it can be very costly, difficult, and time-consuming. Virus infections often cause large financial losses due to network disruptions, decreased productivity, corrupted data, and leaks of confidential data. Additionally, a company’s reputation can be threatened if it spreads viruses to its business associates.

The third important factor in MacGREGOR's choice of supplier was support and the service level. IT personnel is located only at the bigger offices. Therefore, the fact that F-Secure employs trained IT staff was crucial. “You need to trust that the system functions so that you do not become paranoid when e-mails arrive," Kimmo Lumme continues.
