F-Secure On-Line Scanner now available

After the huge publicity generated by several major virus outbreaks over the past few years, it is hard to imagine anyone not having virus protection on their computers. Unfortunately this is still not the case. It seems to be a wonderfully optimistic and typical human characteristic to assume that no misfortune will ever befall oneself – only other people have bad things happen to them!

In today’s virus environment, it is actually possible for someone to have a virus on their computer for a long time and not even be aware of it. The virus can, for instance, be happily sending thousands of spam mails in the background while the user uses the computer as normal, and does not realize that anything is wrong.

These users with an exaggerated sense of optimism can now have their positive attitudes affirmed by using the new F-Secure On-Line Scanner. This tool allows users to perform a one-time scan of their computers for free, and it produces a report of the system virus situation. In the best case scenario, no virus will be found, and the happy users have further evidence to support their conviction of simply being very lucky people.

But should a virus be found, the tool can also remove the infection in many cases (although, in some cases, the ordinarily installed F-Secure Anti-Virus software will be needed). This would naturally prompt the hitherto lucky users to reconsider their strategy of relying on blithe luck, and motivate them to buy the F-Secure Anti-Virus service and the full product, thus enabling them to stay protected. The scanner is also a good way of cleaning up the machine before installing a regular anti-virus solution.

F-Secure will also be offering the on-line scanning technology to its service provider partners. This will, in turn, also make the tool available to the customers of these service providers, and help them to evaluate their degree of luckiness, and, subsequently, buy the F-Secure security service through the service provider.
The On-Line Scanner is available now through the F-Secure website (www.f-secure.com), and requires the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 (or higher) browser, as well as enabled JavaScript and ActiveX.
