Always on – Always protected

A long time ago wild techno-optimists envisioned how data systems would become a key part of many administration, business and research operations. Boy, were they wrong! Today’s reality is much wilder!

Today not even science fiction movies are able to capture the existing reality of computer networks. Just consider the recent movie Terminator III: The Rise of the Machines. In one key scene of the movie a general pushes a button that enables a Hollywood-style supercomputer-network to take over and start ruling the world. Obviously that is ridiculous, and will not happen in such a dramatized way.

That can be considered good news – in which case the bad news is that it has already happened to us. No button was pushed. No missiles are flying. It did not happen in a few hours, it took 50 years. And it was not dramatic – it is very mundane. Our dependence on the “machines” (computing hardware, software and networks) is a reality in those everyday things you do not notice very much – as long as they work.

Water runs from the tap. Power from the socket. Heating in your building. Billions of pieces of goods are transported neatly over land, air and sea. The phone systems work. Pictures on the tube. Sound in the speakers. Pages on the display. MP3 in your ears. Email. Processors and software in virtually every single electrical gadget you own. Food in your neighborhood shop. Today all this, and more, is utterly dependent on data systems in their infrastructure. Always on?

So here’s the question: what part of your everyday life, or of the existence of your business, is not dependent on a working data system and network today?

This is why we at F-Secure think we are in a rather serious business. Viruses and other malicious attacks are a real threat to our current way of life. Our technology-saturated world has no real way back, should anyone even want that. Our only way is to make sure our computers and networks keep on working. This means protecting them from viruses, worms, hackers and all the rest of the scum. That is what F-Secure does for a living. That is the business we are good at.
