So you think your PC is safe from virus attacks, hackers, spam, crackers, and snoops?

Do you ever have that sneaking feeling that your PC is not safe when you browse the Internet? Have you ever received unwanted e-mail, or has a virus ever infected your computer? Even worse, has anybody ever stolen data from you without you even knowing about it? Do you know what your kids are doing when they are surfing the Internet?

Don't be so sure, be sure

According to latest estimates, as many as one out of three PCs may contain spyware that can secretly record and transmit sensitive personal information. Today, there are more than 24,000 spyware versions growing in the wild, and the number is increasing fast. 100,000 viruses already exist, with more than 10 new viruses being found every day. Furthermore, as much as 70% of all e-mail sent and received is spam. The Internet is a very useful tool for finding information, but it is home to many sites that you don’t want to visit, or that you wouldn’t want your kids to even know about. Home users want and need to use their PCs for many purposes. Because broadband connection makes it possible to be always online, the need to keep your PC free of nasty things is more important than ever. Do you really want to waste time fixing your PC after a virus attack, that is, if you’re even able to fix it at all? This article will give you more information about the threats out there and how to protect against them. Or as we say – “Be Sure”.

SPAM

When 30% of all your incoming e-mail is pure rubbish that you don’t want, you start feeling irritated. When the number is closer to 50% you start getting mad. By the time you open your e-mail account, and over 90% of your inbox is filled with junk messages from people you don't know, or from senders called xxxxx, you start giving up and resort to using a telephone or fax to get things done more smoothly.

Sound familiar? For many e-mail users, this is already a reality – or at least it will be in the near future. Unsolicited e-mail, better known as spam, is making life difficult for many private and business e-mail users.

E-mail spam is a strategy to flood users with many copies of the same message in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. E-mail spam is, in most cases, commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, "financial services", medicals, etc.

Spyware

You are probably familiar with freeware, shareware, cookies, media players, interactive content, and file sharing. What you may not realize is that it could contain code or hostile software that allow the “bad guys” to collect and misuse your private information. They can track your surfing habits, abuse your Internet connection by sending data to a third party, profile your shopping preferences, hijack your browser start page or pages, alter important system files, and all this without your knowledge or permission. Examples abound of porn sites being installed on innocent users’ PCs, where the PC has become a web server for the porn site web pages. You can just imagine the consequences this would have for your security and privacy, and the legal implications these exploits could entail for you.

F-Secure Internet Security™ 2005 has industry-standard, anti-spyware solutions that will keep your PC free of any unwanted content.

Parental control

The Internet is probably one of the best places for information gathering, education, communication, and entertainment. It is an exciting, eye-opening place. On the other hand, as your kids surf the Net, just one click of the mouse can lure them to visit sexual, violent, or otherwise offensive web sites. Today, Google claims to search 4,285,199,774 web pages. This is about 1 billion more pages than they claimed to index in 2003. Further, it is important to understand that search engines only reach the “surface web”. Beyond the pages that the search engines index lies a wealth of content that is estimated to be 500 times larger than the surface web. Already in January 2002, the Internet Software Consortium reported to have “counted” as many as 147,344,723 Internet domain hosts.
