Data security at home

Anti-virus protection and data security are traditionally seen as problems faced by the business world. Some ten new viruses are written every day in the world. The complexity and technical nature of these have hampered the utilization of data security solutions among home users. For normal home users, who mainly use the Internet to send and receive mail and to surf the net, it is difficult to comprehend the data security risks involved and ways to protect their systems against such threats. Recent virus outbreaks, which have been discussed widely in the media, have, however, attracted interest and caused concern among home users as well.

Some ten new viruses are written every day in the world. Most of the new viruses spread through the electronic mail. According to the statistics of Messagelabs of the UK, one in every 200 e-mail messages sent over the net is currently infected by a virus. Viruses pose a threat to company and home computers equally. It is vitally important that home computers are also protected with an appropriate anti-virus program, which is updated and maintained regularly.

The use of various broadband connections (ADSL, cable modem, etc.) increases rapidly in homes. The broadband offers a keen Internet surfer a quick and economical connection to the network. On the other hand, it subjects the user to many data security risks. The connection is open all the time and it is a two-way channel: in other words the user has a quick access to the net, but his or her computer can also be accessed from the net. According to studies, attempts are made to access a computer with a broadband connection once an hour on the average, during busy times even more often. This is why broadband users should protect their computers with local firewall software, which prevents hacking from the Internet.

This spring, F-Secure has introduced two new products in Finland and Sweden for the home user market. F-Secure Anti-Virus 2003 is an anti-virus program aimed at the home user and F-Secure Internet Security 2003 combines anti-virus protection and a firewall program for workstations.

Each program is designed especially for the home users. (The program has a Finnish user interface and includes a Finnish user guide and customer support.) The software is very easy to install and use. Since many of the routines required by data security are automated, the user need not learn any complex data security details to be able to run the program. If there are problems, the user can always contact our support, which will serve them in their own language. The program will be available from any computer store where users purchase their computer supplies.

The anti-virus program protects electronic mail and Internet surfing by preventing viruses and malicious code from entering the computer. When the system is connected to the net, the program automatically updates the virus description databases from F-Secure's servers. This ensures that the program will protect the user's computer against the most recent viruses as well. F-Secure's Anti-Virus Research Laboratory serves F-Secure's customers 24 hours a day and responds to new data security threats immediately.

In addition to the anti-virus capabilities, the firewall component of F-Secure Internet Security 2003 prevents unauthorized access to a computer. There are certain pre-detemined security profiles in the firewall program, of which the user can select the most appropriate. There are different security profiles for different end users and different situations from very strict to more lenient protection, which allows, for example, the use of network games over the Internet. The program also informs the user if his or her computer has been attacked.

F-Secure Anti-Virus 2003 and F-Secure Internet Security 2003 is be available at computer stores this summer.
