Deutsche Telekom in the vanguard

The exponential growth of Internet security threats, such as new viruses, worms and Trojans, as well as intrusions continue to increase the demand for internet security. Home users and small offices in particular need security, but do not have the time or the resources to keep their systems up-to-date and protected. In addition, the rapid increase of broadband access further increases market demand for always-on and easy-to-use security services. Almost every 215th email is infected with a virus (source: Messagelabs). When a computer is connected to the Internet, it is exposed to hackers trying to find “open doors” into the system. Whether the connection is from home or from the corporate network, data inside the computer can easily be stolen, accessed, attacked or otherwise misused remotely by outsiders.

Traditional security software solutions such as anti-virus and personal firewall are often too complicated for home users to install and manage. Far too many Netizens have old software versions and outdated anti-virus signature databases. Internet Service Providers have actively started to offer managed services to home users and small business offices. This allows offices to concentrate fully on their core businesses while turning to industry experts in securing the data infrastructure.

Deutsche Telekom offers antivirus and firewall services to small businesses in Germany. While Deutsche Telekom markets, sells and provides technical support for the services, F-Secure provides the security applications, the back-end technology to manage subscriptions, aas well as hosts the service on behalf of Deutsche Telekom.

“For Deutsche Telekom as a supplier of broadband Internet access it is necessary to provide security especially for the business users of the Internet. Therefore an extensive package of security products and services was included in our portfolio that is based on the needs of large but also small businesses. Our security services in particular were set up to remove the need of our customers to invest large amounts of money due to new threats and risks that quickly outdate hard- and software. The cooperation with F-Secure offers Deutsche Telekom the ability to provide security solutions at an excellent cost-to-performance ratio to businesses as well as home-office users. This cooperation goes from secure communication via public networks up to the similar important issue of desktop security," said Mr. Hendrik Otten, Head of Lifecycle Management Solutions, T-COM, DT AG.

This service is being offered by the T-Com division of Deutsche Telekom to its small business customers. The Personal Security Service combining anti-virus and personal firewall services is offered initially to T-Com’s 350,000 small to medium-sized businesses with web-based downloads. During 2003 the offering will also be available at all T-Punkt retail stores to all customer segments across Germany.
