F-Secure Receives World's First FIPS 140-2 Certification

Helsinki, Finland - August 19, 2002

F-Secure Corporation is the first company to receive the FIPS PUB 140-2 validation, an important certification for data security or cryptography related products purchased by the U.S. government. The certification applies to F-Secure's Kernel Mode Cryptographic Driver, a module used in the company's security products and also available for independent software vendors through licensing agreements.

"Being the first company in the world to receive FIPS 140-2 validation proves F-Secure's technology leadership," said Ari Hypponen, Chief Technology Officer of F-Secure Corporation. "This is a significant milestone and will help the company further expand into the government sector."

U.S. and Canadian Federal Government organizations are advised by NIST/CSE (National Institute of Standards and Technology of the United States of America / the Communications Security Establishment of the Government of Canada) to use FIPS-140 validated products when choosing data security or cryptography related products. FIPS PUB 140-2 (The Federal Information Processing Standards Publication 140-2) is a standard that defines government security requirements for cryptographic modules in the USA.

FIPS-140 validation is performed by an independent third party, and it verifies that the security software implementation meets the most demanding quality standards. The certificate is a top-rated confirmation of F-Secure Corporation's technology excellence.

Atlan Laboratories, an independent and innovative testing laboratory that provides FIPS validation services, conducted the security validation against the security requirements that cover 11 areas related to the design and implementation of a cryptographic module.

"Securing the first FIPS 140-2 validation for F-Secure is a landmark in the government security world. This is still a new process and F-secure is breaking new ground by successfully securing the FIPS 140-2 validation," said Edward Morris, Laboratory Director of Atlan Laboratories.
