F-Secure Announces World's First Anti-Virus Product for Wireless Information Devices

Anti-Virus Protection for Mobile Phones, Communicators and PDAs

Espoo, Finland - August 9, 2000

F-Secure Corporation (HEX:FSC), a world leader in wireless security technology, today announced F-Secure Anti-Virus for EPOC, the world's first anti-virus product for the Symbian EPOC platform. The product incorporates F-Secure's Mobile Scanner Technology and features advanced wireless features.

"The next generation of mobile phones and PDAs bring the Internet to your pocket. The openness of Wireless Information Devices poses new security issues which must be addressed," said Risto Siilasmaa, CEO and President of F-Secure Corporation. "Information must be protected where it's created, stored and processed. Since these new platforms will take that information everywhere the user goes, the security protection must follow. F-Secure Anti-Virus is the first native solution to protect these systems against malicious code."

"Sonera expects there to be over 800 million wireless devices capable in connecting to the Internet by 2005," said Juha Häkämies, CTO of Sonera Zed for Business. "Secure access to corporate applications while on the move is a key issue in the wireless corporate Internet environment. We welcome F-Secure's initiative to provide virus protection on the new fast emerging platforms."

F-Secure's new security solutions enable wireless application service providers (ASPs) to offer remotely managed security services to their corporate and consumer customers. F-Secure expects security to be one of the fundamental added value services for all service providers in the future and will aggressively seek partnerships with wireless operators to enable these services globally.

According to Chris Christiansen, Program Director, Internet Security of IDC, "As more wireless devices find their way into corporate environments, wireless security is a growing concern to IT departments. With the emergence of these devices come a whole new slew of possible security breaches. We strongly believe that the best approach is a proactive one - not reactive. Even though there are no known viruses on these platforms today, you can be sure that there will be in the future, and this kind of technology will be required in the wireless world."

F-Secure Anti-Virus for EPOC works on the Symbian operating system which is optimized for the demanding requirements of wireless information. With a wide range of wireless applications and communications capabilities, the Symbian platform has already been licensed to Ericsson, Motorola, Nokia, Panasonic, Philips, Psion, Sony and others. These companies manufacture more than 85% of the world's mobile phones.

F-Secure Anti-Virus for EPOC is the only product to offer on-the-fly real-time protection against binary viruses, script language viruses, trojan horses and email bombs for complete peace of mind for the user. The product uses the Mobile Scanner Technology to enable F-Secure researchers to analyze and disinfect the future viruses as soon as they surface. The Mobile scanner is optimized for the smaller memory and storage requirements of wireless information devices. The product also features centralized policy-based management through F-Secure Policy Manager. Users will be able to have anti-virus updates pushed to the wireless device at any time, through the air, the instant they become available.

The early availability program of F-Secure Anti-Virus for EPOC starts immediately with qualified hardware vendors and operators. This is the first announcement from F-Secure for the wireless and PDA platforms. "We will continue to build various security services and applications on major wireless platforms with the added benefit of centralized policy based management," says Ilkka Starck, Director of the Wireless Security Business Unit at F-Secure Corporation.
