F-Secure Anti-Virus database update caused decreased system performance

On April 1st, F-Secure released a database update, which caused a significant performance impact when installed on the system.
The symptoms include:
- fssm32.exe process using 100% of CPU time over a continued period unless the on-access-scanner of F-Secure Anti-Virus was disabled,
- fsavsd.exe process causing high CPU usage (F-Secure Anti-Virus for Microsoft Exchange),
- MS Exchange Information Store service stopped (F-Secure Anti-Virus for Microsoft Exchange),
- mediocre performance with different applications,
- slow system startup,
- slow network login.
The problem affected:
- some customers running F-Secure Windows Anti-Virus Clients on Desktops and Servers,
- some customers running F-Secure Anti-Virus for Microsoft Exchange,
- some customers running F-Secure Internet Gatekeeper for Windows.
Note: Only a fraction of our users actually experienced any of the symptoms described above.
The problematic database version 2008-04-01_01 was released on April 1st at 04:00 EET. The issue was addressed with database version 2008-04-01_08, released April 1st at 17:40 EET.
We apologize for the inconvenience caused to some of our customers and are currently implementing steps to prevent similar issues from taking place in the future.
