F-Secure Protection Service in Virus Bulletin's June 2007 comparative test

Jun 12, 2007: VB100 award not received due to old signature database used in test - normal customer installations fully protected

A Technology Preview build of F-Secure Protection Service for Consumers 7.00 (7.00 build 387) was tested by Virus Bulletin in their June 2007 comparative on Windows XP SP2. The tested F-Secure product did not receive the Virus Bulletin VB100 award in this comparative test because the score for F-Secure Protection Service for Consumers was 99,88%.
F-Secure has received VB100 award in several earlier consequent comparative tests.

The reason for not passing the test is as follows:

The F-Secure Technology Preview (Beta) build which was used in the test had its built-in antivirus databases from early March and therefore the Polymorphic W32/Allaple worm variant was missed. The reason for including an old database in the tested version was a mistake on F-Secure's part. The databases were not updated with an offline database package by the time of review. However, in a normal end-customer environment the databases would have been automatically updated to contain detection for the W32/Allaple variant in question.

F-Secure has had the referred W32/Allaple worm variant detection in our database updates since late April 2007, so normal customer installations have been protected against both W32/Allaple and other threats as usual.

John Hawes, Technical Consultant, at Virus Bulleting states:

"After some investigation, we discovered that the product submitted for the test did not include the latest updates available at the submission deadline. After retesting with these updates in place, F-Secure comfortably detected everything on the WildList, and would easily have qualified for the VB100 award had the correct data been supplied. Their customers, with the benefit of automatic updates, would certainly have been protected by this solid and reliable product."
