Look North for a Safe, Private Cloud

Consumers are concerned about the security of cloud providers’ technology and what those providers might do with their data. So do secure personal cloud services really exist?

Helsinki, Finland – June 12, 2013: Those wondering if truly secure, privacy-protected cloud services really exist need only look to security leader F-Secure. The company’s extension into content cloud services is backed by unwavering commitment to data privacy and protection stemming from its 25 years in online security – and also from its roots in Finland, where privacy is a fiercely guarded value.

Research shows that consumers want personal cloud services, but they want to know their content is private, safe, and under their control. When storing content on social networking sites and with cloud storage services, 63% of consumers are concerned about the vulnerability of storage providers’ technology, and six out of ten are concerned about these providers selling their content.*

F-Secure’s content cloud has been conceived, built and managed according to strict security and privacy policies with multiple layers of security safeguarding encrypted consumer data. As an additional example of how F-Secure truly implements security at all levels, the data itself is stored using ambiguous metadata structures. Like a big city with no map and no street names, the obfuscated metadata structure would make finding anything impossible for an unauthorized party.

“F-Secure’s cloud is built to conform to high EU and Nordic standards of privacy,” says Janne Jarvinen, Director, External R&D Collaboration at F-Secure. “We are active in Nordic and EU cloud consortia that focus on how to do cloud the right way. We build systems that can be trusted and it is an honor for us to ‘do the right thing,’ which is keep consumers in control of their data.”

F-Secure’s emphasis on safe cloud services even extends to protection from malware in the cloud. F-Secure scans uploaded and backed up content for malware with its award-winning best protection** technology, an important way of preventing the spread of malware especially when it comes to file sharing and collaboration through the cloud.

Born and bred into privacy

For Finland-based F-Secure, privacy is not just a marketing buzzword, but a closely guarded cultural value backed up by strong privacy laws. EU and Finnish laws protect the secrecy of individuals’ correspondence, telephony and other confidential communications and allow consumers to control the use of their personal data. Finnish universities in turn produce IT workers and administrators who are staunchly devoted to privacy practices, and those workers bring their respect for personal privacy with them when they come to work at Finnish technology companies like F-Secure.

“We take personal privacy very seriously in this country,” says Timo Laaksonen, Vice President, Content Cloud at F-Secure. “Worldwide, people are concerned about cloud services, and they wonder about their data being used for profiling purposes without their permission. F-Secure is the product of a country where privacy is part of the very fabric of the culture. Your content is your content and we respect that. With everything we do, we operate under that principal.”

An international thought leader in cloud security

F-Secure is internationally regarded as a pioneer and thought leader in cloud security, with CEO Christian Fredrikson sitting on the board of the European Commission’s European Cloud Partnership. F-Secure stores content for millions of people globally, making up several petabytes of data in five data centers on three different continents. F-Secure has a presence in over 100 countries around the world.

F-Secure’s personal content cloud solution Content Anywhere, which it offers through mobile and broadband operators, allows consumers to store, sync, access and share their photos, videos, documents and other files safely anywhere, from any device.

*The F-Secure Global Consumer Survey covered web interviews of 6,000 broadband subscribers aged 20–60 years from 15 countries: Germany, Italy, France, the UK, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Finland, Poland, the USA, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Australia and Malaysia. The survey was completed by GfK, April 2013.

**F-Secure received the award for Best Protection 2012, for protection from malware infections, from the AV-TEST Institute. www.av-test.org.
