F-Secure product upgrades from previous versions causes decreased system performance

Feb 13, 2008:

There is a significant performance impact when installing the latest product version on top of an older product version. Fssm32.exe takes 100% of CPU time over a period of 10-60 minutes until the computer has automatically applied the latest virus definition updates.

The problem affects upgrades from the following product versions:

  • F-Secure Protection Service for Consumers 6.15, and earlier
  • F-Secure Protection Service for Business 2.1, and earlier
  • F-Secure Client Security 6.04, and earlier
  • F-Secure Anti-Virus for Workstations 5.44
  • F-Secure Anti-Virus for Windows Servers 5.52

If you are planning to upgrade from these versions F-Secure recommends waiting for the service releases fixing this issue. The service releases fixing this issue will be available by February 27th 2008 from F-Secure Webclub.

The latest 7-series products use extended virus definition updates which are not available for these older product versions. Due to a recent addition in the virus definition updates, the temporary inconsistent state of the virus definition updates right after the product upgrade has caused the problem to come visible.
